Words From A Desert Heart

We began as clans…
   grew into tribes…
      and developed into nations.
The day will come
   when humankind
      awakes
         with a new consciousness.
From this awakening
   will emerge
      those who have learned from the past…
         without judgement,
      those who join together
         with their siblings of the world,
      those who eagerly return
         to the simple ways
            of our ancestors,
      those who change their environment…
         the Universe…
            in a positive way.
They will live on…
   they…
      are the future tribes.

I wrote this 1997. The original intention was to write an explanation of the name of the Andean music group my ex-husband and I started in Chicago – Tribus Futuras, or Future Tribes. As I began to think about what the name meant for me, it morphed into a poetic description of what I envisioned as a beautiful idea of humanity waking up from our current (then or now) mainstream mentally and realizing how wonderful our lives could be if we were willing to live in communities that dedicate their time and energy to living in the spirit of simplicity, fidelity, and humility. Twenty-six years later, I see that there is hope for what, to some, sounded like an unrealistic dream. I have discovered a community of siblings who live a life of Gospel love and service as they walk in the footsteps of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi.

Tribus Futuras

Comenzamos como clanes…
   después como tribus…
      y desarrollamos como naciones.
Llegará el día
   en que la humanidad
      se despierte
         con una nueva consciencia.
Surgirán
   de este despertar
      aquellos que han aprendido del pasado…
         sin juzgar,
      aquellas que se unen
         con sus hermanas y hermanos del mundo,
      aquellos que se deciden volver
         a las simples formas de vida
            de nuestros ancestros,
      aquellas que cambian su medioambiente…
         el Universo…
            de una manera positiva.
Ellos vivirán…
   ellas…
      serán las tribus futuras.

Escribí esto en el año 1997. La intención original fue de escribir una explicación del nombre del grupo de música andina que mi exesposo y yo iniciamos en Chicago – Tribus Futuras. Cuando comencé a pensar en qué significaba el nombre para mí, la respuesta se convirtió en una descripción poética de lo que visualicé como una idea hermosa de la humanidad si nos despertáramos de nuestra mentalidad convencional (de ese entonces u hoy en día) y nos diéramos cuenta de cuan maravillosas podrían ser nuestras vidas si estuviéramos dispuestos a vivir en comunidades que se dediquen su tiempo y energía a vivir en el espíritu de sencillez, fidelidad y humildad. Veintiséis años después, veo que hay esperanza para lo que, según algunos, pareciera un sueño ilusorio. He descubierto una comunidad de hermanas y hermanos que viven una vida de amor y servicio evangélico mientras caminan en los pasos de los Santos Francisco y Clara de Asís.
