Words From A Desert Heart

Everything was darkness…
   everything was silence…
      everything was void…
         until a light appeared…
      and called himself Sun.
When he lit the earth…
   Sun saw himself in the lake.
He was so surprised…
   that he fell from the sky
      toward the water.
As he entered the lake…
   thousands…
      and thousands…
         of silver drops
            flew into the air
         and arranged themselves
      in the sky…
   they called themselves Stars.
A small piece of the Sun
   also splashed into the air….
      Her light illuminated the sky
         while the Sun was in the lake.
      She called herself Moon….
When the Sun returned
   to his place in the sky…
      to his wonder…
         man emerged from the lake.
And with him…
   music.

This is an original Creation Story based on two of the creation stories of the Andean region of South America. One tells that the omnipotent Creator Viracocha emerged from Lake Titicaca and created the earth, sky, stars and humans. The other is the story of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, the children of the sun god Inti, who emerged from Lake Titicaca and founded the Inca Empire. It is one of several narratives I wrote about Andean culture when my ex-husband and I were performing Andean music in Chicago (from 1995 to 2004). We would often begin our performances with this narrative that we would seamlessly follow by a musical piece.

La Creación

 Todo era tinieblas…
   todo era silencio…
      todo era vacío…
         hasta que apareció una luz…
      y se llamó Sol.
Cuando iluminó la tierra…
   Sol se vio en el lago.
Se sorprendió tanto…
   que se cayó del cielo
      hacia el agua.
Al entrar al lago…
   miles…
      y miles…
         de gotas plateadas
            esparcieron en el aire
         y se colocaron
      en el cielo…
   ellas se llamaron Estrellas.
Un pedazo pequeño del Sol
   también salpicó al aire….
      Su luz iluminó el cielo
         mientras el Sol estuvo en el lago.
      Ella se llamó Luna….
Cuando el Sol volvió
   a su lugar en el cielo…
      para su asombro…
         el hombre salió del lago.
y con él…
   la música.

Esta es una narración original basada en dos de las leyendas andinas de la Creación. Una cuenta que el Creador omnipotente, Viracocha, salió del Lago Titicaca y creó la tierra, el cielo, las estrellas, y los humanos. La otra leyenda cuenta que los hijos, Manco Capac y Mama Ocllo, del dios sol – Inti, salieron del Lago Titicaca y fundaron el imperio incaico. Es una de varias narraciones que escribí acerca de la cultura andina cuando mi exesposo y yo hacíamos presentaciones de música andina en Chicago (desde el 1995 al 2004). A menudo comenzamos nuestras presentaciones con esta narración que seguimos de manera fluida con una pieza musical.
